Reality Television Show Ethics

Media both in the States and around the world have ‘discovered’ the so-called ‘reality’ television shows are indeed highly profitable. This resulted to a growing string of shows in the recent years. While not all of these shows are successful, many achieve considerable popularity.

The first thing to remember is that reality TV is nothing new. One of the popular examples of this is the oldest “Candid Camera’ created by Allen Funt where it showcased a hidden video of people in strange situations, and was very popular for many years. The main basis for most of these shows seems to be to put people in embarrassing, painful and humiliating situations for the others to watch and laugh and be entertained.

These shows would not have been made if people do not watch them. The reason why people watch these shows is because it is a way of entertainment or some find it shocking that makes them unable to turn away. There never was any attempt to justify these reality TV shows as worthwhile or enriching. Nonetheless, it raises questions as to why they are made. People indeed enjoy watching actual people do impossible or embarrassing things on TV, thus the popularity of these shows worldwide.
